What is PCI DSS?

PCI DSS stands for Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard and is a set of requirements issued by credit and debit card companies for merchants to follow to ensure the security of customer card details.

These standards were introduced in 2006 by what has become known as the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council; this combined five different programs: Visa Card Information Security Program, MasterCard Site Data Protection, American Express Data Security Operating Policy, Discover Information and Compliance, and the JCB Data Security Program.

As an online merchant using 1-Ecommerce or Shopfitter 4 the level of compliance differs depending on which payment method you use:

  • PayPal Website Payments Standard - no action is required because the transaction is entirely managed on PayPal's payment environment: See the relevant PayPal PCI DSS Compliance page for details.
